I wasn’t a supporter of Alex Nuttall. I wouldn’t vote for him as an MP. I voted for his opponents as he ran for Mayor. I have never called myself a Tory or even tilting to right of centre. And now I am on his team for re-election.
I had my first personal contact with Alex just after the horrific events of October 7th, 2023, when he called for my thoughts on a civic reaction to those events. Perhaps I was one of the few Jewish persons in his contacts list. I don’t know. However, his reaction to the horrific events of that day, I found, very heartfelt and sympathetic. We arranged an Israeli flag raising and lowering to half mast. He spoke at our synagogue.
I know that much has happened in the two and a half years since that event and we have all developed our own thoughts about that bitter conflict. But his reactions that day, in that context, changed my initial impression of him. I also now had his cell phone number.
I happily, and promptly called on him about the Southshore plans for a stadium. I happily (and without remuneration) prepared a report of all of the differing aspects of that plan. The Mayor impressed me with his thoughtful balancing of the various opinions on that project and others around the lake and into the Downtown where I now live. I was thrilled with his pushing ahead with a new home for the Performing Arts Centre. I was happy to help him as he paved the way for a soccer stadium on the Central Collegiate Lands and quietly pushing for a return of the Baycats to Queen’s Park.
Among the most difficult matter that I watched him face was that of the drug and mental health issues in our City, and in particular in our Downtown. This is such a complex, multi-faceted problem. How do you truly separate the “affordable housing” issue from the crisis in addiction and mental health? I spent 48 years practicing municipal law, my final eight years with the County of Simcoe. I have a good idea of what Alex has faced and is facing. County responsibility for housing. Provincial responsibility for health. Drastic action has had to be taken. Alex had the nerve to take that action, but he has done so with empathy. Co-operation between levels of government has still to be initiated. Alex is working on that now. He has taken some bold action to make my home in the Downtown a better one.
My years dealing with municipal law, and my last two years working on projects with Alex has proven to me what I already knew. Municipalities are the closest government entities to the people. What mayors and councillors do at this level have the most direct impact on the people who elect them. I am honoured to support him and to work on his campaign.
